Weekly Updates
Week of February 27th
-
In Math, students finished modeling equations together on whiteboards, where students practiced solving and explaining their thinking step by step. We have now moved into the leveled practice booklets, organized as mild, medium, and spicy; students are expected to complete some questions from at least level, but are encouraged to try the spicy questions, as these involve deeper thinking and more complex problem solving. We will be working on this next week as well. The booklet is posted and if your child runs into trouble, the notes pages are posted on Mrs. Witzke's math page.
-
In Science, students are beginning our crystallization lab. Students will work in groups of three to grow crystals using borax, Epsom salts, and rock candy solutions, observing how each substance forms different crystal structures. They will collect data daily and compare crystal shape, size, and growth rates to better understand how particle arrangement affects the properties of crystalline solids.
-
In French, students are creating a foldable paper house where they label each room in French and include at least five items found in that space. They will also write simple sentences explaining what happens in each room, helping them practice vocabulary, sentence structure, and everyday language in a meaningful context.
-
In English, students are working on a guided essay where all of the research and background information has been provided for them. Their focus is on organizing the information clearly, structuring their paragraphs properly, and putting their ideas together in a logical and cohesive way.

In Math, students are finishing a practice booklet that focused on transformations and reflections. This booklet was completed in class, and we modeled each question together to help students prepare for their upcoming assignment. Next week, we will move into rotations and then begin combining all three types of transformations. Knowing key vocabulary is especially important for success in this unit.

In Science, we have begun learning about atoms, molecules, and how they connect. Students were introduced to the HONC 1234 method, which helps them remember how many bonds each of the main elements can form (Hydrogen 1, Oxygen 2, Nitrogen 3, Carbon 4). Next week, students will apply this knowledge by creating molecule models with plasticine and toothpicks. To finish off the week before the holiday break, the class will take part in a fun STEM building holiday challenge.
